While Little Cake Bakery remains my favorite because of its range of flavors and quality ingredients, these little beauties are a nice option when I just don't feel like driving to Buckhead. Moist cake, the right amount of frosting and cutesy "cupcake flags" if you are gifting or serving at a party.

Sneak peek at H & F Bread Co.

Even though H & F Bread Co. has not opened its doors, I am already crazy about the bread thanks to the bread assortment at Holeman & Finch Public House and the H&F stand at the Peachtree Road Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings. Everything I have tried has been stellar. I was at Holeman on Thursday night (getting the burger, of course) and asked the barkeeps when they were going to be open. Mr. Best said Wednesday if all goes well with the city. Lets hope so. I am dying to see the store and grab more of their yummy baked goods.

CRÜ Urban Lounge, in the Ponce Springs Lofts off Ponce de Leon, is the kind of gem you stumble upon when you'd least expect it. The two-story space, which resembles a modern residential loft, feels like you're hanging at a friend's house who just so happens to serve drinks and small plates. The lounge serves a variety of wines by the glass and bottle (hence the name), but the exciting cocktail menu is the real reason to go. When my sister and I went for lunch at Honey Pig in Duluth, you know I had to stop by the new Korean bakery next door and get a loaf of milk bread (I am hopelessly addicted to the stuff). It is a very cute little store with lots of fun sweets and a super nice staff. They stock all the standard Korean sweets that you can enjoy in store or take it to go. They were even nice enough to cut the massive loaf of bread in half so we could each take some home. Here are some more pictures of the desserts which we were just too stuffed to even think about touching.

Alon's Bakery and Market: Dunwoody

REVIEW
I was shocked to hear that Alon's had chosen the Eatzi's old space near Perimeter Mall, for their second location. I wondered how the tiny store was going to fill such a large space. Well, they certainly found a way. I figured parking would be much easier than the original store given the massive parking lot. I was wrong and ended up driving around for a good 5 minutes before finding a space. The place was absolutely packed with shoppers and people lunching. Aside from the usual items sold at the VaHi store, there are many other new areas guaranteed to please the most discerning shopper--including a chocolate area. I grabbed a loaf of pain de mie, some Hamentashen and a spicy Tunisian tuna sandwich to go. Cheese lovers will be happy to hear that one of my favorite cheesemongers, Tim Gaddis (formerly of Star Provisions), is now working here. An overall great store worth your visit.

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
I have been pretty sick with pneumonia and stuck in the house for days. I needed to get some fresh air so we went for breakfast at The Corner Cafe before an early showing of Persepolis at Phipps (what a great movie and they were robbed last night). I am normally an egg gal, but my tummy was craving something sweet and bread-y. So, I got the crème brûlée French toast, an individual pot of the French press coffee from their extensive coffee selection and some fresh grapefruit juice. I only made it through about 3/4 of one of the slices, but it was very good. There was nice pool of acidic fruit puree on the bottom of the plate that cut the sweetness of the bread nicely and the fruit was very fresh--even if it was not in season.

My friend, who is not a big breakfast person, had the veggie omelet. He liked everything except the grits which he found watery. He couldn't keep his hands off that bacon though. We both liked out meals and it was a nice way to start the day. I am still a fan after all these years.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: 8/29/06

A lot of Atlanta Foodies hate Buckhead Life Restaurants but I am not one of them. I have consistently good meals at Pricci and Buckhead Bread Company is one of my favorite brunch spots. They do a good business and the food is solid. Now, I am a breakfast person. Always have been. I find great pleasure in a well-done breakfast. My favorite item to have is the veggie omelet with grits and a side of bacon (pictured above). The toast is a thin and crisp sourdough that is a perfect textural contrast to the gooey cheese oozing from the interior of the omelet which is stuffed with a variety of vegetables. Add some tabasco and it is pure heaven. My friend ordered chicken sausages served on toast and topped with a poached egg. A side of nice arugula salad and sauteed apples fill out the rest of the plate. They really enjoyed it.
I have heard that their creme brulee french toast is good as well. I want to go back and have that and their pancakes which look great. Call ahead and expect to pay a bit more than at your average breakfast spot. Glad it is down the road from me.

Food find: White Windmill white bread

Food find: milk toast
For my daily bread, I am more of a multi-grain or rustic fan, but certain dishes--like French toast--call for good old white bread. I prefer to buy full loaves for such occasions, but can't seem to find a satisfactory version at conventional supermarkets. So, when I need white bread, I head to Korean bakeries for this "milk toast." You can find it at spots like White Windmill, SuperH and some Japanese stores like Tomato where I got this loaf. The bread is just heavenly--densely packed with layer after layer of buttery bread-y goodness. They also have it in half loaves (at most locations) if the full loaf is more than you need.

REVIEW:
I have never had that much of sweet tooth. Give me something savory and I am happy. I do, however, love anything with a flaky pastry crust and have a fondness for savory pies. I don't know why I kept forgetting to blog about the Australian Bakery Cafe in East Atlanta, but they are a favorite guilty pleasure of mine.

I stopped by after taking the dog to Parkgrounds to grab a little treat for myself when I read the paper. Ordered a cornish pasty and a mushroom and steak pie to go. I rushed home and threw them into the toaster oven at 350 degrees to warm them up.

I greedily dug into my meat pie and it was so good. Not the gruel-filled hockey pucks you find at some Australian bakeries. Just meaty and flaky goodness. I was not crazy about the cornish pasty--the veggies were akin to the over-peppered vegetable mixes that fill most Chinese egg rolls. I think meat is the way to go. Go get one if you have not already.

Little Cake Bakery: Buckhead

I have given up my fight against doughnuts and cupcakes. I surrender. I have found my new favorite cupcake--thanks to a tip from a friend. The bakery has been open for about three weeks and the cupcakes are what I envision a perfect cupcake to be. Moist cake, fun flavors, and solid icing. The staff are also very friendly and the place just feels happy. I took a chocolate and peanut butter and a vanilla/vanilla to go. They were great! You cupcakes fiends should definitely check them out soon. You won't be sorry.

Food Find: Pissaladiere at Alon's



I have been eating these things for a while now. I always get a couple after my Saturday (they are only available on Saturday and run out quickly) morning jaunts to Morningside. The crust is impossibly crispy and flaky. The tomatoes are tangy and sweet even though they are not in season. I suggest you heat them up for about 5 minutes at 300 degrees or just until they are crisp. They also offer onion and potato versions but the tomato is still my fave.

Jerusalem Bakery: Marietta

REVIEW:
I am always in search of a good piece of baklava. I decided to try out the Jerusalem Bakery on a recent jaunt to Tasty China. I bought a box of freshly-made baklava for around $5. It was good. Not the best I have ever had, but definitely solid. There was a bit of residual raw flour taste and quite a bit of honey, but still a nice version. They also make fresh pita if you are in the mood for a good falafel sandwich. I would buy it again.

Pastries A Go Go: Decatur

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
We all have our weaknesses when it comes to food. Whether it is fried chicken or a big greasy burger, you know you have one. Two of my many frenemies are biscuits and coconut cake. I was in Decatur after a house hunt the other day. I went to check out Southern Sweets but it was closed. I decided to go try the biscuits at Pastries A Go Go which I had heard were amazing. I ordered one of these mini-coconut cakes (Pictured above) and a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit (pictured below) to go.
The biscuit was good. Buttery, large and just the right mix of salty and sweet. The bacon tasted old and the cheese was not right for the sandwich. The biscuit was divine though. I had some of the cake later in the day after dinner. The exterior was perfection. Coconut, torched meringue and a perfectly sweet frosting. The inside was just eh. The cake was bland as hell but the frosting made it ok. Needs a sweeter cake and sweetened coconut. Then, it would be perfection.

Verdict: Get yourself there for the biscuits. They truly are great.

Rhodes Bakery: Atlanta


REVIEW:
I am a sucker for little cakes of any kind. Cupcakes and petits fours are my favorites though. I pass Rhodes Bakery on Cheshire Bridge all the time but I never go in. Someone told me they had some good petit fours so I decided to stop by last Friday. The selections are pretty basic...Undecorated caramel, chocolate and white cakes. Also had a few little cookie items. The cheese straws are supposed to be good too. My eyes went straight to the petits fours which they have in two sizes. I grabbed some and boy, they were delicious. Most petits fours have a hard shell with a small piece of dry cake in the center. These had a light fresh glaze and very moist cake. How could anyone resist these things? They are the perfect portion size so you don't have to feel guilty about indulging.

Duck's Cosmic Kitchen: Decatur

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
Grabbed some lunch here yesterday. Got the pulled pork sandwich and the BF got the pot roast sandwich. We both got side salads and I bought a baked doughnut for later on. The pork was pretty good...lacked a bit of salt though. The bread (baguette) was not as crispy as I like but was good since it was fresh baked. The sandwich could have used a sauce or something aside from the pickled peppers. The BF's sandwich was better. Great walnut leek bread and tender meat. the salad was also very good. BF loved the dressing which they bottle and sell. A bit too sweet for me. The doughnuts were awesome. You would never know it was baked. $20 for two sandwiches, 1 drink and a doughnut. Nice outdoor seating area and the hostess brought a dog bowl full of ice water for my puppy. I'd go back.

Douceur de France: Marietta


REVIEW:
My friend and I headed over here after Grape Leaf Grill for some pastries and coffee. I was excited at the prospect of a an authentic french patisserie in Atlanta. I greedily ordered a slice of their sour cream pound cake, a crossiant, 2 caneles and a coconut macaroon filled with chocolate truffles. Here is the breakdown:
-Pound cake: Boring..nothing French about it..they have some with other flavors but it tasted like something I could make at home.
-Crossiant: There was not enough butter added to the dough so it was too chewy and not as flaky as it could have been...I still ate the whole thing because I am a pig
-The caneles: The biggest let down...there was no crunchy shell which IMO make caneles great...I found out why...they keep them in the freezer and defrost them..yuck.
-The coconut macaroon: Rich, stale coconut though and the chocolate they used did not fit somehow. My friend liked it though.
We did not eat lunch there so I cannot comment on their offerings but that creme brulee french toast at breakfast looked good.

West Egg Cafe: Atlanta


RESTAURANT REVIEW:
I've never met a cupcake I didn't like. I heard West Egg Cafe made a mean one and their breakfast wasn't that bad. I went over for breakfast on Saturday morning after a visit to the Morningside farmer's market in the rain. I walked in and asked for a table...I was told there was a 20 minute wait. There were like 8 tables open, not cleared and there were not that many people waiting. I went over to the coffee bar and order some coffees and bought a few baked goodies for later. I picked up some coconut cupcakes and a smores bar. The smores bar was a good idea. Kind of a brownie and smore hybrid. I liked the marshmallows and the chocolate brownie part. The bottom graham cracker crust was not the best tasting and I ending up crumbling most of it off. The cupcakes were truly divine. Not massive but small. No matter, they packed a massive coconut punch. The frosting was creamy but not sickly sweet. A truly lovely site. Ah...cupcakes.

Right...onto the breakfast. My table got the blue plate special (eggs, sausage, grits and toast) and the veggie omelet with grits. The eggs were oily and nothing special. the ingredients tasted fresh but the seemed hastily prepared. The grits...they had love. I have never had a better bowl of grits in my life. They were unbelievably rich and creamy. I don't know what is in them but you must try them.

I do have to comment on the service. It was a mess. Most people were visibly annoyed with their servers. They seemed to be lacking staff or could just have been poorly managed. They really need to work on that...it takes away from the food.

Piece of Cake: Buckhead


This place is kind of hidden away next to Savor and has been there forever. They make such darn good cakes that they have them by the slice although the majority of their business seems to be full cake orders. They have a coconut cake (pictured) right now that is to-die-for. Stop in and get a slice.

French Toast has never tasted so good


I have a new addiction. I found these little slices of heaven at the Buckhead Bread Company on the corner of Pharr and Piedmont. They are baked pieces of thick fresh bread flavored with a delicious symphony of caramel, butter and cinnamon. They are only available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They are 95 cents for a generous portion and sell out quickly. They are even better when heated in an oven @ 350 degrees for about 5-7 minutes. Do yourself a favor and pick one up. Your sweet tooth will thank you.

White Windmill Bakery and Cafe: Duluth


REVIEW:
Went to over to grab some goodies while I was waiting on my order at Book Chang Dong Tofu House. What a great bakery. Take one of the provided woven baskets and start filling it up. They have many Korean and European baked goods to choose from. They also have a nice cafe area where you can enjoy your purchases and a coffee from their coffee bar. It is very clean and warmly lit. I especially like their salted doughnuts, corn bread and loafs of bread. Stop in next time you are over at Super H Mart. You won't be disappointed.
