Floataway Café
This has to be one of my favorite places to eat in Atlanta. The menu always makes me smile and I have not had a bad meal here in ages. Not crazy about the redesign and the service is always iffy. But, my food was on point last night. Got a beautiful roasted beet salad (pictured above) with local chevre, radishes, mache and slices of avocado. My steak frites was perfect. Smoky meat cooked at the right temperature and the fries….oh the fries. They are my favorite in Atlanta. Still going strong after all these years.
Stella Neighborhood Trattoria
Went to this new Grant Park Italian place. Great service, but they are still getting their rhythm down in the kitchen. Standouts were the arugula salad and cod fritters. Pasta dishes lacked salt and the meat in the pork dish was tough. The polenta that came with our braised short ribs was an odd shade of grade, but the grass-fed meat from Riverview farms was tender and tasty. While I appreciate the attempt at making pizza a bit healthier with the wheat crust, I am just not a fan. They are using local ingredients, which is a huge plus. And, I can totally see this place becoming a family-friendly joint for neighborhood locals.
Cuerno
Made a return visit to this little gem since my "first impression" and I’m still loving it. We tried the brandade, which was buttery and a total joy to eat. Still making our way around the paella selections, we went for the soupy paella with lobster. It was good, but I prefer the Valenciana. Splurged and got some of the Iberico, which the chef came to slice at our table. Although it is pricey, it was worth the splurge. My only complaint was the sangria, which I found to be very weak on flavor. Service was great and it quickly becoming one of my favorite spots in Atlanta.

After a completely disappointing meal here with the previous chef, I went to check out the new menu and chef. Cocktails—specifically the passion fruit capirnha (swoon)—have to be some of the best in the city. But, the food fell flat for me once again. The homemade root chips were a nice start to the meal, but the salsa completely bored me. The forbidden rice (something most people rave about) was too al dente for my taste and so cold it made my teeth hurt. Same problem with the farro salad. Interesting use of ingredients, but not destination worthy like Ullio’s other restaurants such as Cuerno and Sotto Sotto.

Sotto Sotto: Inman Park
1 comments Published by The Blissful Glutton on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at 10:44 PMIf I had to choose one European cuisine to eat for the rest of my life, it would certainly be Italian. There is something simple yet elegant about the cuisine. It's focus on preserving the integrity of ingredients and seasonality places it near and dear to my heart.
Atlanta has many Italian restaurants that I love and I am always looking for a new one. Sotto Sotto has consistently won praise from Atlanta critics for their Italian fare. I paid the restaurant my first visit on Monday night. I felt transported to Italy the moment I set foot in the rustic space. We ordered the fava bean and pecorino salad, scallops with cannelli beans and tomato sauce, lasagnette with bechamel and bolognese, and the duck ragout with pappardelle.
The fava bean salad was flavorful, but a bit too crunchy--par-cooking the beans would have made it perfect. My date's scallop dish was good, but not great. The sauce needed to be cooked a bit longer because it was a bit raw and under-seasoned. The scallop was perfectly cooked though and the hint of smoke made up for the sauce.
My pasta dish was gorgeous. The noodles were cooked the right amount of time and the sauce was surprisingly light. I paired it with an Amarone (my favorite wine) which was hot, but very well-balanced. My friend enjoyed his duck ragout, but I did not get a chance to taste it.
Verdict: I can see this being added to my rotation. I want to try more of their dishes, especially the proteins. The service was exceptional and unobtrusive. The space just felt comfortable and warm. I almost did not want to leave. I would definitely return. Nice spot.

Dolce: Atlantic Station

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
A friend of mine invited me to Dolce a while back. I was curious to see what this place was all about. I had heard that they made their own burrata and I was intrigued-I adore burrata. We each ordered wine from the meager wine list. I got a prosecco that was enjoyable. We ordered the burrata and proscuitto, the chopped salad, the risotto with porcini mushrooms, and the osso bucco. Our appetizers came out and we instantly noticed that both the avocado and the dressing were missing. The waiter remedied the situation , but my dining partner had already lost interest in the salad. The burrata platter arrived and it did not look like any burrata I had ever met. It was way too creamy and lacked flavor. The skin was almost too tough to cut with a knife. To make matters worse, the kitchen had drenched the entire platter in balsamic vinegar. We did not finish it. Our mains came out and they were immense. My risotto had more balsamic vinegar drizzled all over it. Maybe to mask the fact that the "porcinis" were out of season and tasteless. The risotto was just average-it needed more of something and the balsamic just ruined it for me. The osso bucco was actually very tender and well seasoned. The risotto Milanese could have benefited from a bit more salt though. No gremolata to be found, which normally provided the brightness this heavy dish requires. We sat waiting for our dessert menus, but they never came. Our waiter just forgot about us. 20 minutes later (yeah, we were letting it go to see how long we could sit there before anyone notices our necks craning for server attention), we flagged someone down and asked for our bill. Seems our server thought our bar bill was our dinner bill.
Verdict: Sexy space. Mediocre food. Seems many of the clientele were there in hopes of seeing Ashton Kutcher--bridge and tunnel baby (or as I like to call it, highway and access road). Should you go? Stay far, far away.

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
I am a sucker for a good Pizza Margherita. My friend E. recommended I try the pizza at Fritti. I am rarely in Inman Park but drove down there for lunch last week. I took a seat on the patio even though it was quite a hot day. I was surprised how pleasant and cool it was out there. I ordered the Regina Margherita (pictured above) and the funghi fritti. The funghi fritti (pictured below) was well seasoned and drizzled with truffle oil. The truffle oil really made the flavors pop. I loved it. Meaty mushrooms and very crisp.
My pizza was really very good. It was crisp and not soggy in the middle which seems to be symptomatic of many Italian pizza places in Atlanta. The Cheese and sauce were very good as well. I asked for them to put some arugula on top of my pizza and they did so for no charge. It was very fresh and a perfect compliment to the flavors.
Verdict: This place is definitely going into my rotation. Great menu and pizza. Nice atmosphere. Good service. Will be back.

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
Went over for dinner last night. Grabbed a patio seat at the last minute without any problem. Here is the quick and dirty version:
-Selection of salumi (speck, proscuitto aged 20 months, cacciatorini and Bresaola): 4 choices for 9 bucks. Good selection to choose from and ample portion size. Hard to screw up.
-Roasted suckling pig/porchetta($16): interesting menu item. BF will always order if it is on the menu. I found it a bit bland and not smoky at all. I've had better at chinese joints in SF.
-Roasted lamb ($16): I think BB commented on this a while back in another thread. It was well executed but very bland. They seem very shy with the salt.
-Cipoletta ($3): Spring onion wrapped in pancetta and grilled. Delish. Only 2 onions though for $3...I felt a bit jipped.
-Grilled asparagus with Parmesan ($3): Very good. Charred a bit with a thick slice of parm on top. I would have like a bit more cheese but it was still good.
-Wine list: very extensive...nice range. Have selections by the quart and half liter. We had 2 half liters which ended up being half our meal price.
-Service: They seem to be working out the kinks. Our server forgot our salumi course and ended up bringing it with our mains which the owner took away and fired again. Giving us another cipoletta dish which we ate greedily after waiting for 30 minutes for something aside from the bread to show up. they also gave us a free dessert (cannolis with pistachios or something) to make up for the mix up. They were not that great.
The bottom line: Enjoyed everything but the grilled meats...a bit pricey for the portion size and our meal ended up being $140 after tax and tip. I would go back for lunch and eat anything but the meats which need some work. You could make a meal out of salads, apps, cheese, smoked meats and veggies. They still need work on the flow. Pleasant atmosphere..enjoyed lingering and watching the foot traffic as we sipped the last of our wine. Not a total loss. Would go back if I was in a pinch.

Bella Cucina: Virginia Highland

Well, I finally got in to actually do some shopping. Cute setting...samples galore...knowledgeable staff. The store has been open for about 3 months but the concept is very strong and I can see it staying in VaHi for a while. I picked up some blood orange marmalade, Meyer lemon spread and a beautiful bucatini pasta. The prices are a bit high but a nice place for the occasional item or gift.

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
My Sis and I were on our way back from downtown on Friday and needed a quick bite. We stopped into Da Chicago Dog for some grub. I was tempted to get the hot dog but got the Italian Beef instead. My Sis got the sausage and pepper sandwich (pictured). My sandwich was good...spicy peppers, mustard and onions. The beef was a bit underseasoned but good quality. The sausage and peppers were better. I will be returning to try one of those famous Chicago dogs. They have many other options including burgers, fruit salad and baked goods (I overheard some folks in line talking about how good they were).

RESTAURANT INFORMATION:
Stopped by La Tavola last night because we were driving by and needed somewhere quick before a performance at Emory. We got a table easily around 6:30. I ordered the Arugula and Pear Salad with frisee lettuce, an almond vinaigrette and Grana Padano cheese and the Pappardelle Bolognese of beef, veal, pancetta and tomato. I also had a nice glass of Valipocella. The name of the producer is eluding me. My dining companion had the Orecchiette with Sausage broccoli rabe, garlic, chili flake and Pecorino Romano and the Classic Caesar salad. I have to say I was really happy with my meal. The service was great, the bread fresh and hot...everything was delicious. La Tavola is a solid neighborhood Italian that actually prepares their food well and lets the ingredients shine.I will be returning and suggest you go if you have not already.

La Grotta has Alba truffles

You can add them to any dish for a supplement of $17.50. I had it with a simple tagliatelle. I am thinking of spoiling myself again.

Misto: Atlanta (CLOSED)

Went to Misto for dinner tonight. Wanted something simple and casual. The service was horrible. Asked for fresh pepper for my salad and they brought me a shaker. They forgot our bread. Waited forever to take our order. It was just ridiculously bad service. I did eat well though and for not too much money. Had a simple salad and pasta with meatballs (it was a comfort food night). Saw they had burrata (a rarity) on the menu. The bread was hot and tasted fresh. I will go back and pray for a different server. Just a decent neighborhood Italian when you want a bowl of pasta minus the pretense. Deserves another shot.

Osteria 832: Atlanta

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
I had lunch at Osteria 832 yesterday. I'd eaten dinner there numerous times with no complaints. However, yesterday's experience left much to be desired. The setup is a bit different at lunch. You place your order at the counter and then they bring your food out to you. I ordered the Pizza Margherita and the Insalata Mista. My friend had the Caprese sandwich and the Arugula salad. I've had their pizzas many times before and loved every bite of 'em. But, this one was cold, gummy, and bland. My salad was over-dressed and full of slimy pieces of lettuce that was way past its prime. The bread on the sandwich was cold but the rest seemed up to snuff. The arugula was crisp and properly dressed. My friend had no complaints but I was not satisfied with the food or service. The place is normally good so I will go back. I just hope they step it up a bit. Lunch is no reason to slack off.

Pricci Italian Restaurant: Buckhead
0 comments Published by The Blissful Glutton on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at 9:40 PMRESTAURANT REVIEW:
Atlanta's pizza options are seriously lacking. I am not talking about your standard Fellini's fare but a nice wood-fired pizza Margherita. I've tried everywhere...Baraonda, Brio, Osteria 832, Fritti and Woodfire Grill. Pricci's version is still one of my favorites. Yeah, I know the place is swarming with pocket-square wearing waspy types looking to feel hip. But you can get it to go which is what I always do. For $9, you can get a perfectly crisp and flavorful pizza. I always get mine with an arugula salad which is lightly dressed with lemon, olive oil, and shaved parmesan ($7). They'll also throw in a basket of bread with a goat cheese and marina dip for free if you ask for it.

Alfredo's Italian Restaurant: Atlanta
1 comments Published by The Blissful Glutton on Sunday, July 24, 2005 at 1:51 AMIf you drive by Alfredo's, you'd never guess that this little hole-in-the-wall has some pretty good Italian food in Atlanta. This restaurant has been around forever and rightly so. It is always packed and the food is consistently good. They are know for their veal which every employee swears up and down is the best in town. It is. I personally like "The Godfather" which has three medallions three different ways. This place has all the standards and you can't go wrong if you are in the mood for some hearty Italian fare. You'll leave with a full belly and a smile on your face. What more could you ask for?
